Maintaining Choices in Community Character

"Diversity of Density" means maintaining a mixed network of developed and undeveloped lands, integrating the site, its community, and landscape. At the community scale, an essential component in New Hampshire’s quality of life is the range of choices in community character, from wild and working landscapes to rural communities to villages, towns, suburbs, and cities. The table below categorizes the 259 municipalities and unincorporated places in New Hampshire into one of ten types, based on the consideration of the following factors:

a. the number and density of housing units

b. presence of active forest management

c. presence of privately owned community or municipal water supply

d. percent of housing served by community or municipal supply

e. other

A state map presents the classifications geographically.
Please note this is only one method of analyzing community types, and is presented here as a basis for discussing current land use and choices in potential future character.
